Mitt Romney’s pledges during GOP primary debates in June, 2011 to dismantle FEMA were brought up by the media this week. During those debates, Romney declared that the best case scenario would involve privatization of disaster relief altogether.
But Romney himself, as governor of Massachusetts, depended heavily on federal aid during a number of storms.
“His position is crazy,” said conservative commentator Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s Morning Joe program Tuesday. “The first thing I did when I was in Congress (in Florida) and there was a hurricane was get on the phone with federal officials, the only ones in any kind of position to coordinate responses involving a number of states.”
